Avoid Fines: 9 Quick Checks Before You Ride Off in Pattaya

Renting a scooter in Jomtien is one of the best ways to explore Pattaya’s beaches, hills, and nightlife. But did you know that traffic police checkpoints in Pattaya are frequent, and fines for missing documents or safety gear can easily ruin your day? In 2025, Thailand has tightened enforcement—helmet fines now reach ฿2,000 for both rider and passenger .

To help you ride stress-free, here are 9 quick checks to do before you leave the rental shop.

1. Helmet On (and Strapped!)

Thailand’s helmet law applies to riders and passengers. Police are cracking down hard in Pattaya and Jomtien. Always wear a properly strapped helmet—your rental includes free helmets that meet safety standards.

2. Carry Your License + IDP

Foreigners should carry a motorcycle license with the proper endorsement plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Without these, expect fines at checkpoints .
👉 Tip: Make sure your IDP is the 1949 convention version, which is accepted in Thailand.

3. Keep the Insurance Card (Por Ror Bor)

Every motorbike in Thailand must carry Por Ror Bor compulsory insurance. It covers injury to third parties and accident victims . Your rental bike will include a copy—keep it in the seat compartment.

4. Check the Lights

Police often stop riders for non-working lights, especially at night. Test headlight (low/high beam), brake light, and indicators before you set off.

5. Mirrors Must Be Fitted

Missing mirrors are a quick reason for police to pull you over. Always check both left and right mirrors are attached and aligned.

6. Tires & Brakes

It might seem basic, but under-inflated tires or weak brakes are not just unsafe—they attract unwanted attention at roadside stops. Your rental team checks this, but give it a quick squeeze test yourself.

7. Registration Tax Sticker

Look at the bike’s front or side for the current road tax sticker. Expired stickers mean the bike isn’t legal to be on the road.

8. No Extra Passengers

Every passenger must have a helmet, and small scooters are not designed for three people. Riding with more than two is illegal and dangerous.

9. Respect Parking Rules

Pattaya and Jomtien are cracking down on illegal scooter parking along Beach Road . Stick to marked bays or paid parking areas to avoid clamping or fines.
